If It’s Not Composed, It’s Just a Snapshot

In the 2 weeks since I posted the announcement about Gloria Hopkins’ composition webinar, dozens of readers have clicked the link to Gloria’s site and read her article about turning a so-so photo into impactful art. This tells me many of you recognize the value of composition.

In the composite to the left, can you explain which is better and why? If you’re serious about photography, you need a grasp of what makes a photo compelling, impactful and/or aesthetically pleasing. The keys to excellence in photography are control, technique and composition. Here’s an article by Gloria that demonstrates her ability to organize, simplify and reduce complex concepts down to easy-to-grasp, mental maps that you can readily follow.

How many times have you wished you could ask an author what he or she meant by a certain phrase or passage? Hear Gloria explain compositional maps in her webinar. Webinars are like regular classrooms including questions, comments and answers on-the-fly. Don’t understand something? Just ask and Gloria will answer your specific question. It’s as if you’re in the room with Gloria.

Register today. If you’re a former student of The Digital Photo Guy, use the discount code TDPG10 for $10 off the regular webinar price of $49. If you recently bought Gloria’s book, use the code eBook20 for $20 off. That’s like getting the book for free! If you’re a registered reader of my site, use the code Meetup for a $5 discount.

Freebie of the Month

If you’ve used the Depth of Field Calculater at, you know how incredibly useful it can be. When I first discovered the site several years ago, the mobile version was only available for PalmOS. Well, my Palm Pilot died long ago and other solutions I’ve tried on my Blackberry have been pretty lame.

DOFMaster now offers an iPhone/iPod app for $1.99 and an Android version for free! The Android version works directly from their mobile website ( An Android app is also in the works.

New, Lower Prices

If you listen to the economists and pundits, the US economy is off life support. That just means it can now fog a mirror but, hey, that’s better than last year when they were administering last rites.

As a “Thank you” to everyone who’s hung in there and slugged it out over the past few years, I’ve reduced prices to unprecedentedlevels. Some one-day workshops are now $99 (formerly $149.) Wild Animal Park Workshops now include entry fee ($40 value) and webinars are as low as $49 (formerly $69-$99.) Repeat students are eligible for discounts after the first class. Students who have taken my Palomar classes are also now eligible for 10% discount. After two classes through my website, you’re eligible for 20% discount on all classes and, after three classes, your discount jumps to 25% for classes over $100. After five classes, you join the ranks of Exalted Learners and qualify for as much as 50% off (some conditions apply.)

Thank you for the very informative and practical photo session.  I believe that I learned so much more on how to use the program and aperture modes.  You were very helpful…  There’s so much to learn and as a beginner I’m like a sponge.  I look forward to joining you on photo shoots in the future.  I always enjoy your weekly email updates…Keep doing what you’re doing….You are very good at it!
