Breaking News – Topaz Labs FREE Webinar

The long awaited Topaz Labs webinar has been scheduled for Thursday, December 16. Ashley Robinson, Product Manager, will present a demo of ReMask3, the latest iteration of this amazing tool and Adjust2, two of TL’s most popular programs. If you’ve ever pulled your hair trying to get a great mask of a frizzy haired person, ReMask3 will make your eyes pop out. That’s what happened to me when I saw the first version of ReMask at Photoshop World 2 years ago. Since then, it’s become the de facto, go-to tool for cutting out complex images from the background. So, if putting Grandma’s head on Grandpa’s body is your idea of fun, this is a “must see”. To sweeten the pot, Ashley will have several Topaz Lab’s programs as door prizes. The last time we did this, about 6 people walked away with prizes worth as much as $300.

We don’t yet have an exact time but it will be the afternoon in Central Time (1-7PM Eastern, 11AM-5PM Mountain, 10AM-4PM Pacific). Stay tuned for more details.

PSE9 – The Good & The Bad, No Ugly

After playing around with PSE9 for a few hours, my conclusion is that it’s only worth buying it if you’re already a power user of a previous version or if you’re currently using a version older than PSE 7 or you’re  buying PSE for the first time. If you’re on PSE7 or 8 and aren’t yet fully adept with it, PSE9 won’t do much for you.

The above video is actually more about the interface changes introduced in PSE8. Many of these changes reflect the interface in full Pgotoshop CSx. The new tools in PSE8 and PSE9 are OK but I think there are better ways to accomplish the same result. I doubt Adobe will be asking to advertise on this site anytime soon but, hey, I let the chips fall where they may.

Pin-Up Photoshoot for My Students

On Sunday, January 16 from 10AM to 1PM, I will be shooting pin-up models at Deer Park Winery. If you’d like to join me, the cost is just $25 plus $8 museum entry fee. All the money goes to the models since I’m not about to ask these great gals to spend 3 hours of their weekend posing for nothing. There are just 5 spots so reserve your spot quickly. To reserve at spot, e-mail me and I’ll send directions for sending payment. Once the models are confirmed, there are no refunds. There may be from 1 to 3 models at the shoot.

There won’t be any formal instruction but, as always, you can borrow any of my gear that isn’t in use. The intent for you, the students, is to gain experience directing models and shooting under studio conditions.

      Hi Clarke,
Glad to hear good news about InFocus. Send me some Before/After images and I’ll post them with my next VMMT (PSE9 – First Look, Part 2). Thanks for reading.

    Hi Lee
Do you know if Remask2 owners will get a free upgrade to Remask3? I believe that’s Topaz normal procedure.

    • Lee

      Hi Colin,
I haven’t heard any different so I believe that’s the plan. Topaz Labs has an amazingly liberal upgrade policy. I bought DeNoise before it even had a version #. It’s now up to v5 and I still got a free upgrade.

I’m really looking forward to their new program, InFocus. It sounds like an improved verson of my go-to sharpening tool, FocusMagic. FM has been great but it’s now 7 year old technology. In case you didn’t rx the e-mail, InFocus is on sale at an introductory price of $29.99 (regular $69.99) until 12/3. That’s a $40 savings! The discount code is “supersharp”.

BTW, for anyone thinkng of buying TL tools, use the discount code “digitalphotoguy” for a 15% discount. DO NOT use this with InFocus because the introductory promo code is better and they won’t combine 2 codes. Disclaimer: I have no financial interest in Topaz Labs and receive no remuneration from Topaz Labs.

I really am hoping to make the Topaz webinar. During the day on a weekday is more difficult, but I will see what I can arrange. Just purchased InFocus.

    • Lee

Yeah, I hear you about during the workday. Fortunately, I work for a fantastic guy who is just the best boss anyone could ask for, me! ha-ha

I’m thinking about InFocus but I already have so many plug-ins that I’m afraid my PC is going to explode. I forgot to put that discount announcement in the latest MMT.
