Student Photos from Anza-Borrego

Here are the first 3 student photos from the Spring Desert Wildflower workshop in the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The first day covered wildflowers as elements in landscape photography. Notice how we shot from a low angle to make the flowers appear more numerous and dense than they really were.

The first photo is a prototypical foreground-midground-background composition, a standard of landscape photography. The low angle accentuates the flowers and disguises the fact that the patch is only about 5 feet wide. The 2nd photo has no midground element. That gives the illusion the flowers stretch all the way back to the mountains. Notice the “dew” on the petals of the beavertail cactus flower. When photographing flowers, always carry a small spray bottle of water. It’s also helpful for cleaning dust off flowers and leaves.

Video Monday Morning Tip

Today’s video MMT covers fixing animal eyes that are completely obscured for any number of reasons including “demon eyes”, flash blink and nictitating membranes, those 3rd eyelids used by many animals to protect their eyes. The video shows how the left photo below can be turned into the photo on the right. The full video is in the MMT Archives which requires free registration (on the right side of this page).

Pacific Southwest Railway Museum Photoshoot

On Saturday and Sunday, April 24 & 25, I’ll be at the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo, CA to photograph the old train engines, cars and equipment. If you’d like to join me, just show up. I’ll be there as soon as the museum opens at 9AM (earlier if the gates aren’t locked). There won’t be any instruction but you’re welcome to watch how I set up a shot and, as long as I’m not using it, borrow my gear. Here are some photos from my last visit.
